7 Days Kilimanjaro Mountain Trek itinerary
Day 1: On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our tour representative will welcome you and transfer you to Moshi town – the gateway to Kilimanjaro Mountain. Dinner and an overnight at Base Hotel in Moshi (Half Board)
Day 2: After breakfast our tour guide will drive you for 45 minutes you to Marangu gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. After registration with the park authorities, you will start the mountain trek – 30 minutes hike to Mandara encampment. Cross the thick rainforest zone and spend the night at Mandara Hut (2,750m), with beautiful buildings that contain bathrooms and running water.
Day 3: After breakfast ascend for roughly 6 hours, through a forest for a while, before reaching the heather and moorland zone at roughly 3,000m. The mountain peaks at this altitude are spectacular. Spend a night at Horombo Hut (3,720m) with running water and bathrooms, lying in a valley surrounded by giant lobelia and groundsel characteristic of this semi-alpine zone.
Day 4: Take breakfast and proceed past the final watering point, ascending onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro, between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Here the vegetation fades out as you penetrate the desert-like alpine zone (approximately 4,000m). At this point, after crossing the saddle, Kibo peak comes into view. The saddle which is an alpine desert resembles a lunar landscape. This is a 7 hour walk and is normally taken at a slow pace. Spend a night at Kibo Hut (4,703m), a beautiful stone construction with no running water. The ground, here, often freezes at night, but ground temperature rises to above 300c by day. Only lichens and grasses can survive under these conditions.
Day 5: At mid-night start the climb to Kilimanjaro summit. An early start for the 6-hour hike increases the chances of accessing the summit in time for sunrise. Here it is easy to climb the slope to Gillman’s point (5,861m) on the crater rim when it is frozen. Gillman’s point is a 2-hour round trip along the crater’s edge to Uhuru Peak, the highest peak in Africa. Descend from the summit and spend a night at Horombo Hut for a last night at the mountain.
Day 6: Descend past the Mandara encampment to the bottom of the mountain, where every hiker is issued a well-earned certificate. Thence, our tour representative will transfer you to Base Hotel in Moshi for your dinner and breakfast.
Day 7: Take your breakfast and later transfer to Arusha town.
