RWANDA SAFARIS - GORILLA TOURS, WILDLIFE SAFARIS IN RWANDA

Rwanda is often referred to as “Le Pays des Milles Collines” meaning the “Land of Seven Hills” for the endless mountains in the scenically spectacular tiny country. The Virunga Volcanoes in the Northwest form majestic peaks found nowhere else in the world. Submerged by bamboo and dense jungle of the Volcanoes’ forbidding slopes are some of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas. Rwanda has been etched into the world’s consciousness as the focal point of one of the worst genocide in the history of mankind. Today’s Rwanda is attracting many visitors whose interest is to assess for themselves the high rate of development. Rwanda has more than the mountain gorillas of Parc National des Volcans to offer the visitor; the bays and shores of Lake Kivu are a model of the best inland beaches on the African continent any honeymooner would dream of. Deep in the southwest, Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the enormous tropical rainforests that accommodate a variety of primates including a troop of 400 Angolan colobus, and forest birds in Africa. The cultural museum in Butare is compared to none other in Africa.

Since most of the country is mountainous, this involves a great deal of terracing. The banded hills resemble those of Nepal or the Philippines. Tea and coffee plantations occupy considerable areas of land.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Rwanda shares much of the flora and fauna of its neighbors in the region. The rare mountain gorillas have found a haven in Parc National des Volcans. Rwanda owes a lot of gratitude to the late Dr Dian Fossey whose love for the gorillas created a legacy of its kind in the Virunga Volcanoes. It is the only natural treasure the country is proud of. Apart from the gorillas, other attractions include chimpanzee tracking and other primates in Nyungwe Rainforest; birding in Nyungwe; wildlife safari in Akagera National Park and genocide museums across the country.
