Kenya still holds the reputation as the ultimate safari destination in Africa with Africas untamed wildlife area ranging from savannah grassland, swamps, Mountains to tropical forests. It in Kenyas Masai Mara National park that one of the great world wonders of nature occurs, the Wildebeest Migration. A Kenya Safari is renowned for outstanding wildlife viewing including the Big Five (Lion, African Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhinoceros, wide open plains, breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro followed by a relaxing stay on a palm fringed coast with soft white sandy shores.
Kenya has a system of well managed nature reserves / National Parks across the country, where lions, Rhinos, Elephants, zebras, antelopes, Cheetah, primates, gazelles, Buffaloes, and birds among others can be seen in the wild. One large National Parks lies just outside Nairobi (Nairobi National park) and can be visited by taxi from the capital. From Nairobi airport, one can often see giraffes grazing.
The wildebeest migration usually takes place from July to September. Here, huge herds of mammals like wildebeests, Zebra and gazelles move from Serengeti, driven by dry conditions in the region and led by the lightning and thunder to the north, cross the Tanzanian border and rivers to reach the Mara's grasslands. During the course, they are tracked by elusive predators such as black-manned lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas, and crocodiles as they cross the Mara river, and circled by vultures as their journey unfolds.
The open savannahs provide the staging ground for the annual Wildebeest Great Migration making the Mara one of the natural wonders of the world with the densest population of predators, herbivores and birdlife.
Tourists often find themselves amazed at the stark reality that unfolds as the herds cross the rivers. Other land mammals include in Masai Mara elephants, topi, impala, giraffe, gazelle, baboons, jackals, water buffalo, ostriches, antelope and more. The river banks and water-holes accommodate hippo, crocodile and abundant birdlife including herons, kestrels, corncrakes, bee-eaters, hornbills, shrikes, sunbirds. The Masai mara area is also famous for the unique and interesting traditional Masai culture, the inhabitants of the area.
Balloon Safaris take off just before dawn so that you are high above the plains in time for sunrise. Flights last for approximately one hour drifting wherever the air currents take you. Once back, the flight is celebrated with a glass of champagne and a breakfast in the bush, cooked on the balloons burners.
