Climbing Mount Kenya Naromoru route
The fastest route to point Lenana but not as scenic as the other two. It is often overcrowded with many climbers since it's the most popular route compared to Chogoria route and Sirimon route.
Mount Kenya is the countrys highest and Africas second highest mountain located on the Equator.
The Magnificent cliffs and glaciers protect the highest peaks of Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5188m). The third highest summit - Point Lenana, (4985m) - is also glaciated but accessible to walkers. The walk around the peaks is one of the most beautiful expeditions in East Africas mountains, with superb scenic beauty characterized by Tarns and alpine meadows; exotic, equatorial, high-altitude vegetation; sunbirds, hyrax and soaring eagles.
The Mountains forest belts are habitat to a variety of animals such as Black and White Colobus and Sykes monkeys, bushbuck, buffalo, elephant and, lower down, Olive Baboon, waterbuck, black rhino, black fronted duiker, leopard, giant forest hog, genet cat, bush pig and hyena. Additionally, more elusive is a rare type of forest antelope called the bongo. A number of other rare and endangered species include Sunni Buck, Mt Kenya Mole Shrew, skinks, a variety of owls, and occasional sightings have been recorded of albino zebra.
There are three main routes, which penetrate the forest and the moorland. The routes are Naromoru route, Sirimon route and Chogoria route and each of which has something different to offer.
The least used of the three main routes, but features the most gradual ascent profile and best acclimatisation options and above all the most interesting since its on the drier side on the mountain. The route passes through impressive Yellowwood forests in the lower reaches and features abundant wildlife and beautiful alpine scenery higher up.
The forests below the park boundary inhabit animals such as elephant, buffalo, lion, several species of antelope including the rare bongo and occasionally the melanistic forms of both the leopard and the Serval.
Hiking to the peaks requires considerable rock climbing skill and special hiking equipments. However, the mountains lesser peaks like Point Lenana (4985m) and glaciers can be scaled and walked by the fit and the adventurous. Many Kenya rivers flow from the perpetual snows on the peaks among which include the mighty Tana, Kenyas largest and longest river and source of much of Kenyas electricity supply. The best months are January and February and late August through September.
