Some of the best and most spectacular areas of rainforests for chimpanzee trekking include Kibale Forest, Budongo Forest, Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabteh National Park, Kaniyo Pabidi and Semuliki Forests. We also offer excursions and short trips to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, an island in Lake Victoria that is home to orphaned and rescued chimps. You will be captivated by the wonderful diversity of plant and wildlife that you will find within these forests.
Chimpanzees are man’s living closest relative with 1.6% of
our genetic material difference i.e. 98.4%DNA related to man. They exist in 21 African countries. They are one of the four types of very important apes, the rest being: gorillas, bonobos and orangutans. At the beginning of 20thcentury, almost 2 million chimpanzees lived in African forests. Today the number has reduced to approximately 150,000. This indicates that the reduction in the African forest cover is the biggest threat to the survival of chimpanzees. The male chimpanzee reaches maturity at the age of 7 – 8 years and the female one at 6 – 10. Chimpanzees fall under a group of omnivores and therefore feed on both plants and meat, though they rarely eat meat.
Chimpanzees can live as long as 60 years in captivity but can not live beyond 50years in the wild. Chimpanzees are highly social animals. Grooming is among the most social behaviors. It helps them to keep and improve friendship. They share whatever they kill for food. Their arms are longer than their legs which gives them the opportunity to stretch out for fruits on weaker tree branches that can’t bear their body weight.
Dr Goodall’s study on Fredo, the alpha male chimpanzee, revealed a weight of 120 pounds at the age of 20. So Fredo proved the heaviest chimpanzee at Gombe. At birth a young chimp weighs 2- 4 pounds. Chimpanzees can demonstrate emotions like humans do. They can show joy and sadness, love and empathy, and fear and despair.
Below are some of the itineraries that will enable you to access places with the highest chimpanzee concentration. Kibale Forest national park in Uganda is the best place for chimpanzee treks. Chimpanzees can not express vocal language but some of those in captivity have trained in more than 300 signs in American language. The chimps can walk upright for short distances if they are holding something in their hands, but usually use a knuckle walk.
